The CDMA Development Group (CDG) says that the number of CDMA2000 subscribers in the fast-growing South Asian markets has doubled in the last 12 months.
There were 23 million CDMA-based subscribers in 2005, and the end of 2006 showed an increase to 45 million. CDMA20001X is offered by 26 operators across Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Seven of the operators have already deployed EV-DO in the region.
CDMA2000 is making the quickest gains in India, which now ranks as the second largest CDMA market behind the United States. There are six CDMA operators and more than 47 million CDMA subscribers across India.
“The CDG is pleased to report CDMA’s strong subscriber growth and expanding presence in South Asia,” said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG.
South Asia, home to 20% of the world’s population, represents large growth opportunities for wireless network operators.
